Engines and surfaces

Which AI assistants Onym asks, how, and how they appear in the data.

A surface is one place a question gets asked: an engine plus a lane. Surfaces are written engine:lane everywhere in the API, like chatgpt_app:chat.

Chat surfaces

Surface key Shown as How Onym asks
chatgpt_app:chat ChatGPT The chatgpt.com app, logged out, with web search, as a person would see it
google_aio:chat Google AI Overviews The AI Overview on a Google results page
google_ai_mode:chat Google AI Mode Google's AI Mode
gemini_app:chat Gemini The gemini.google.com app
perplexity:chat Perplexity Perplexity's API, which mirrors the app, with web search

Coding surfaces

Coding prompts are asked as an AI coding assistant would be: inside a developer's editor, opinionated, without a web search.

This table reads the live configuration, so it always shows what runs today. Models we track has every surface.

App and API answers

Answers have a method:

  • app: captured from the consumer product, the same page a logged-out person sees. This is closest to what your buyers see.
  • api: asked through the provider's API with a matching system prompt and, for chat, web search turned on.

Surfaces in the data

  • Every analytics endpoint takes surface= to count one surface. The /metrics response lists the surfaces with data in the period, as {key, label}.
  • Aggregate numbers weigh every answer equally, so a surface with more answers counts for more.
  • An aggregate can hide a surface where you're missing. Check visibility per surface before drawing conclusions.

Regions and language

Questions are asked in English from the United States. Answers can differ in other countries and languages; if you need another market, email hello@getonym.com.
