Share of voice

Your mentions as a share of all mentions of you and your tracked competitors.

Formula

share of voice =answers that name youmentions of you and every tracked competitor

Each brand counts at most once per answer, however many times the answer repeats it. Untracked brands aren't in the denominator, so share of voice depends on which competitors you track.

Example

Four answers to one prompt, tracking Acme against Northwind and Contoso:

Answer Brands named Mentions
1 Northwind, Acme 2
2 Northwind, Contoso 2
3 Acme 1
4 Northwind, Contoso, Acme 3

Acme is named in 3 answers out of 8 tracked-brand mentions: a share of voice of 37.5%. Its visibility is 3 of 4 answers, or 75%.

In the API

kpis.sov
{ "k": 167, "n": 738, "rate": 0.226, "prev": 0.127 }

prev is the previous period's share of voice. Share of voice has no 95% range, because its mentions aren't independent of each other; use visibility to decide whether a change is real.

When to use it

  • Visibility answers "do AI assistants know us?" It's the better number to track over time.
  • Share of voice answers "who owns the conversation?" It's useful for comparing brands in the same category and for board slides, but it moves when you track or untrack a competitor.
