Why past numbers change
Some settings recount history. Here's which ones, and why.
Onym keeps every answer and counts metrics from those answers each time you look. So a few settings change how past answers are counted, and others only apply from the next run.
Filters like range, model, topic and branded don't belong in either list. They only change what you're looking at, and nothing is stored.
Changes that recount history
| You change | What happens to past numbers |
|---|---|
| Track a competitor | Its mentions in past answers start counting, so its history fills in and your share of voice can drop |
| Untrack or hide a brand | It disappears from past share of voice and positions |
Changes that only apply going forward
| You change | Why |
|---|---|
| Add or activate prompts | Old runs didn't ask them |
| Archive a prompt | It isn't asked again; its old answers stay in history |
| Reword a prompt | It becomes a new prompt; the old one is archived |
| Upgrade or downgrade | Schedule and limits change from the next run |
Other reasons
- Onym learns new brands. When it starts recognizing a brand, past answers are scanned again, which can move positions.
- Ranges are rolling. "Last 30 days" ends today, so the window moves every day.
- Comparisons use common ground. A change only compares prompts and models measured in both periods, so the "before" number in a change can differ from last period's headline number.
