Opportunities

A to-do list built from answers that name your competitors and not you, with measured results.

An opportunity is a specific thing to publish or a specific place to get mentioned, found in your gaps: answers that name at least one tracked competitor and don't name you.

Two kinds

Owned
Something to publish on your own site. Onym looks at a topic with at least three gap answers in the last 30 days, at the kind of pages those answers cite, and suggests the format: a comparison, a "best of" list, a guide or a category page.
Earned
A third-party site to get onto. Sites cited in at least two gap answers become opportunities, with a playbook for the kind of site: join the conversation on a forum, get reviewed on a directory, get included in an editorial list.

Priority

Priority is the share of your recent answers an opportunity could affect: its gap answers divided by all unbranded answers in the last 30 days. It's labelled high at 15% or more, medium at 7% or more, and low below that.

Lifecycle

Status What it means
open New, waiting for a decision
in_progress Someone's working on it
shipped Done, with the date and URL you shipped
dismissed Not worth doing, with a reason

Editors can start, ship, dismiss and reopen opportunities on the Opportunities page.

Measured impact

When you mark an opportunity shipped, Onym records which prompts it was about: the prompts whose answers made up its gap. From then on it compares your visibility on those prompts only, so unrelated prompts can't blur the result:

  • Before: the 28 days before the date you shipped.
  • After: up to 28 days from that date.

Both periods use only prompt and model pairs measured in each. Adding prompts later doesn't change which prompts an opportunity is measured on.

verdict Meaning
waiting No answers since you shipped
early Less than 14 days of data
up Visibility on those prompts rose significantly
down It fell significantly
none No significant change

Each final verdict is sent once by the opportunity.measured webhook, and appears in the email digest.
