Visibility
The share of AI answers that name your brand. It's the headline number on every Onym page.
- Answer
- One reply from one surface to one prompt in one run. It's the unit everything is counted in.
- Named
- The answer's text mentions your brand or one of its aliases. A link alone doesn't count.
- Visibility
- Named answers divided by all answers that match your filters.
Formula
The API returns visibility from 0 to 1, with the counts behind it. The dashboard shows the same value as a percentage.
{
"k": 167,
"n": 444,
"rate": 0.376,
"low": 0.332,
"high": 0.422,
"change": { "delta": 0.194, "significant": true, "direction": "up", "pairs": 111 }
}A worked example
Acme tracks 19 prompts across 7 surfaces. In the last 30 days, four runs produced 444 answers to prompts that don't name Acme. 167 of them named Acme.
| Period | Answers (n) | Named (k) | Visibility | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Previous 30 days | 555 | 101 | 18.2% | 15.2% to 21.6% |
| Last 30 days | 444 | 167 | 37.6% | 33.2% to 42.2% |
The ranges don't overlap, so Onym marks the change as significant and reports it as up 19.4 points. If they overlapped, the dashboard would show the change in grey and no alert would fire. Confidence and significance explains the range.
Filters that change it
- Branded prompts are left out by default. A question that names a brand, like "Is Acme good for SSO?" or "Auth0 vs Clerk", steers the answer toward the names in it. Pass
branded=allto include them. - Surface.
surface=chatgpt_app:chatcounts ChatGPT only. An aggregate can hide a surface where you're missing. - Topic and range narrow the prompts and the dates.
Don't average daily or per-surface rates. A day or surface with more answers should count for more. Add up k and n, then divide, or ask the API for the wider range.
Visibility compared with share of voice
Visibility asks how often you're named at all. Share of voice asks how much of the conversation is yours. If an answer names you and three tracked competitors, it counts fully toward your visibility but gives you a quarter of the share of voice.
